Introduction: This course is directed toward advanced undergraduate and graduate students in Agronomy, Biology, Ecology, Statistics and other disciplines with the necessary pre-requisite knowledge. The focus of the course is the application of spatial and spatio-temporal statistics. Because the application of spatial and spatio-temporal statistics requires context, we will focus mostly on biological or ecological data.
Prerequisites: Strong programming skills in R. Coursework in statistics that includes statistical modeling (e.g., linear regression) and knowledge of probability distributions (e.g., Poisson, Binomial, etc). Stat 610 or 770, Stat 705 or 713, and Stat 726 or equivalent knowledge is preferred. Knowledge of Bayesian methods and/or mixed models will also be helpful.

Course Objectives:
- Understand the different types of spatial and spatio-temporal data.
- Construct spatio-temporal data sets using program R as a geographic information system.
- Build and implement statistical models that are tailored to the data set.
Course format: This course has three phases. During the first phase, the instructor will deliver standard lectures on Tuesday and Thursday from 11:30 am - 12:45pm. The purpose of these lectures will be to review and develop a basic understanding of statistical modeling and spatio-temporal statistics. The second phase of this course will involve problem-based learning. During phase two, students will be presented with an applied problems that involve the analysis of a spatio-temporal data set. Assignments during phase two will include a preliminary analysis of the data, followed by further learning about the topics needed to complete the activity, followed by a final analysis of the data. During phase two, the time on Tuesday and Thursday from 11:30 - 12:45 will be devoted less to standard lectures and more to question and answer sessions, student presentations, and short lectures to facilitate solving the problem. The final and third phase of the course will involve a final project.
Reproducibility requirement: I expect that all activities, projects and other assignments that involve reporting of the results obtained from computer programs will be reproducible. In the most basic sense, this is equivalent to “showing your work” as you would for assignments with analytical components. I will introduce tools during the lectures that will show you how to do this.
Grading: The course will be for three credits, graded on an A-F scale. A (>90%), B (90%-80%), C (80%-70%), D (70%-60%), and F (<60%). Your final grade will be based on the contributions listed below.
- Bi-weekly journal (40%): For each of the 30 scheduled meetings, a journal entry will be turned in no later than 24 hours following class (i.e., 11:30 am on Tuesday for a Monday class). These journal entries will be graded on a pass/fail basis, with 1 point awarded for a pass and zero points awarded for a fail. Each journal entry will contain ~ ½ to 1 page written responses to the three points below. These responses will be uploaded as a pdf file to Canvas.
- Write a paragraph about something new you learned in class within the past 24 hours.
- Write a paragraph about something you are struggling to understand that was covered in class within the past 24 hours.

- Activities (10%): Several activities will be assigned over the semester. These will be graded on a pass fail basis.
- Final project (50%): A final project will be assigned. Please plan to meet with me during office hours to discuss your project.
General Policies: Class attendance is expected. Being on time to lecture is expected. If you will miss a lecture or be late, you are required to send me an email before the lecture that you will be missed or be late too. If either attendance or punctuality becomes an issue during the semester, I will implement a grading policy that rewards students who are on time and attend class. Late journal entries, portfolios, and project components will not be accepted and will receive a grade of zero.
